As obesity, disease, and learning disabilities in children are increasing at an alarming rate, parents are seeking ways to help their children be healthy. Healthy eating for children is becoming a priority.
However, it can be frustrating when you work outside the home. Unless you eat late at night, there is never enough time to cook from scratch any more. After a long day at work you are tired and the last thing you want to do is spend extra time in the kitchen. Many parents opt for picking up something at a fast food chain, or heating up frozen prepackaged foods. You take that already prepared chicken, warm it in the oven and boil some vegetables and you are done. Maybe you like to buy the meals in a bag. Either way, you are eating food which is not healthy.
I know that it is so convenient to pick up dinner at a fast food restaurant or use prepackaged foods especially after a long day of work, but you are doing your family and yourself a disservice. Below I list several things that might help you help your kids eat better and lead healthier lives.
- Obviously from what I just wrote, eliminate prepackaged and fast food. You might not hit this one 100 percent of the time, but do your best.
- Cook from scratch. Double or triple your portions and freeze the extra for another meal(s) later. It doesn't take that much longer to fix a triple portion and the time saved later is tremendous. I do this all the time and I love the time I save in the kitchen.
- Soda in any form is not good for you. Slowly start replacing it with filtered water. Don't underestimate the value of drinking plenty of filtered water. It's a major health benefit.
- Eliminate sugar in the diet as much as possible and do not replace with artificial sweeteners. Use fruit to replace the sweet cravings.
- Do not allow your children to spend a lot of time on the TV and computer. It is not good for their growing brain when used in excess.
- Get your children outside playing (exercising) in the fresh air and sunshine. You need to be outside also. Get some form of exercise with them. It can be a great stress reliever.
- Keep breads and pastas to a minimum. That can affect their health and weight. The gluten in the products are a real problem for more people than realized.
- Have a vegetable tray available at all times. Kids will often go for them if they are easily accessible.
Just change one or two things at a time. Otherwise you and your children might get too overwhelmed which could cause you to give up. You really want to feel successful at this so keep it simple.
